Catalysts for clean hydrogenTechnical University of Denmark
Why platinum tops the volcano plot, and a cheaper catalyst that could take its place. Best Poster.
The work
Green hydrogen is made by splitting water with renewable electricity, and the reaction needs a catalyst. Platinum works best but is rare and expensive. Our team of three set out to explain why it works and what could replace it.

What I did
- 01Measured how fast different catalysts broke down hydrogen peroxide in the lab, and modeled the reaction.
- 02Ranked catalysts on a volcano plot by how strongly they bind hydrogen, with platinum at the top.
- 03Proposed molybdenum disulfide as a cheaper replacement, heat-treated in hydrogen to give it more active sites.
